1991-1992 developed and documented manual handling techniques for the safe handling of people using adaptations of the semi-squat lifting technique and had them officially endorsed by Dr Tom Woolard M.B, B.S., F.R.C.R.M., F.A.C.O.M., specialist in Rehabilitation Medicine.
1992 commenced lecturing to students in Bachelor of Nursing course at Newcastle University on Back Care, Manual Handling of People and Manual Handling in relation to Occupational Health and Safety.
Re-designed uniforms for nurses and carers and approached The Uniform Place in Newcastle. The uniforms - culottes, shorts, dropped waist dresses - allow freedom of choice and freedom of movement to perform adaptations of semi-squat lifting techniques. The uniforms have now been manufactured and are selling well. I receive no financial gain from this project.
Wrote a book "A Manual of Handling People", published by Helios Therapy resources, Adelaide, released July 1994 now almost out of print. <ordering information>
January 1993, awarded grant from The Australian Occupational Health and Safety Trust to produce video tape programmes on the manual handling of people. This project was complete at the Medical Communication Unit, Royal Newcastle Hospital, Newcastle. March 1994 became a director of Skills for Caring Pty Ltd, together with Margaret Ashby, a registered nurse, to establish a training centre for back care and manual handling especially for the Health Care Industry.
March, April 1994, lectured for WorkCover Authority in Sydney to educate Proprietors and Directors of Nursing in nursing homes on Back Care and Manual Handling and their responsibilities for the Occupational Health and Safety of their employees and residents.
March 1994 became co-director of Back on Track (Newcastle) Pty Ltd, now Tuohy-Main Systems® Pty Ltd; established as consultancy and training for Back Care and Manual Handling in Health Care facilities.
May 1994 Compiled a preliminary document, Risk Assessment in Nursing Homes, printed by Helios Therapy Resources, for the Work Cover inspectors. To be published for general release late 1994.
10th June, 1994, presented a lecture for Aged Services Association, NSW and ACT Inc on Manual Handling in Aged Care Facilities, at OH&S Seminar,
June and August 1994, Employed by WorkCover Authority to train their inspectors in Country South and Sydney metropolitan area so that the inspectors understand the problems of manual handling in the Health Care Industry.
July 1994, presented paper "The semi-squat lifting technique and its adaptations in nursing homes" at the International Physiotherapy Congress in Bali in and also be gave a workshop "Assess before assist in Aged Care" at the same conference..
August 1994, lecturing at TAFE on back care and manual handling of people to students wishing to work in the Aged Care Industry.
September 1994, on the expert panel and gave two workshops on the lifting of people at the final Lifting Consensus meeting on Safe and Effective Lifting, in Sydney, organised by Cumberland College, University of Sydney and the Institute for Training Fitness and Research Inc, Adelaide.
Wrote paper "Lifting People".
October 2nd presented the paper "Assessing for Safety in Aged Care" at the World Confederation for Physical Therapy, Asia - Western Pacific Region in Jakarta
October 11th gave talk to the NSW Commonwealth Rehabilitation Service physiotherapists on how physiotherapists can assist with injury prevention in the Health Care Industry and the community in general
October 21st presented paper "Assessment and its link with safe manual handling procedures in aged care" at the Australian Association of Gerontology 29th National Conference in Perth.
October 28th presented paper "Methods of preventing injury and long term disability for carers in the Aged Care Industry" at the Geriaction National Conference in Adelaide
November 8th 1994, the book "A Manual of Handling People" launched at John Hunter Hospital, Newcastle.
February 27th, 28th, 1995, attended First National Conference on Injury prevention and Control in Sydney..
March 27th-30th 12th World Congress for the International Federation of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, to be held in Sydney. Gave paper "Injury in the Aged Care Industry-Where are the Solutions? and also a poster presentation, "Updated methods for the Assessment and Moving and Handling of Patients".
June 8th 1995 commenced project funded by a grant from WorkCover Authority to make three videos, with the Medical Communication Unit, Newcastle, to be completed in 12 months.

June 26th-30th, 1995, World Confederation for Physical Therapy Congress to be held in Washington DC, USA. Gave two papers -"Toileting with dignity for partially weight bearing and totally non weight bearing clients" and "Teaching basic client assessment skills to carers to assist them with problem solving and injury prevention while moving and handling clients".
Working with WorkCover Authority, NSW, lecturing to proprietors and Directors of Nursing in Nursing Homes in Orange, Wollongong and Wagga between March and July 1995.
July 1995 finalised confidentiality agreement for licensing Tuohy-Main Systems trainers.

Continue to run back care coordinator courses and lecture on back care and manual handling in Health Care and Aged Care facilities round Australia. Also assess residents in nursing homes, hostels and in the community to assist staff to formulate manual handling systems and procedure to firstly minimise the risk of injury to carers and clients and secondly to maximise the rehabilitation potential of the client.
