What do We do?

Kate Tuohy-Main travels extensively to present in-house and external workshops to educate individuals and organisations on how it is possible to change the culture of healthcare to minimise the risks involved with moving and handling people with different levels of ability. These are practical, hands-on workshops that provide participants with practice in the use of manual handling techniques, and mechanical equipment with which to move and assist people.

Workshops

Reports are written for individual organisations following Tuohy-Main Systems two-day workshops. Many hazards are common to many healthcare facilities. These have been summarised in A Manual of Handling People (2nd Edition) with recommendations for their assessment and control.

Organisational Assessment

Specific situations in nursing home and homecare settings are reviewed and assessed. Often carers find assessment a constant difficulty, especially when it comes to which is the most appropriate method for assisting a client to move for daily living activities. Sessions are run specifically to educate staff on how to assess for themselves specific individual clients and their environment. They are taught how to document findings and analyse what is the best strategy to assist the client to - all within a framework of client and carer safety.

We produce and make available videos programs and workbooks on many of the aspects of the Tuohy-Main Systems approach and techniques.

These instructional videos series visually demonstrate many of the methods developed by Kate Tuohy-Main, and are used in ongoing workplace instruction, tertiary education and in technical training.

We write and distribute the book "A Manual of Handling People - Implementing a No-Lift Approach" (now in its 2nd edition). This book contains the blueprint which expands and explains the Tuohy-Main Systems concepts and methods used in all of the workshops and video programs. This book assists educators and students to put the concepts and techniques into practice in their specific workplace.

We also design and create posters which demonstrate warm-ups exercises for work. These posters help body-awareness in health & agedcare workers, enabling them to understand how to use their bodies to assess clients for manual assistance at any given time. They can practise from these posters techniques that will help them to position their bodies to move a load or person if they have assessed for themselves that it is appropriate to do so.
