Who Are We?

Tuohy-Main Systems combines philosophies, techniques and a practical, systematic approach to improving the welfare of people who are frail, sick or incapacitated, as well as their carers and the organisations in which they stay or work. This system incorporates consulting, lectures, workshops, paper presentations, journal articles, books, video programs, posters and networking.

Intro

Tuohy-Main Systems has evolved through the work and vision of Kate Tuohy-Main, a physiotherapist who has worked in over 100 health and agedcare facilities in England, Norway and Australia over the last 30 years.

Over this time she became aware of the injuries occurring to healthcare workers and their clients when they were assisting them to move during activities of daily living.

Origin

In the state of New South Wales, Australia, over $126 million was paid out in 1994/95 for employment injuries in the health industry alone. (Health Industry Statistical Profile NSW Workers Compensation, 1994/95)

The most common mechanism of workplace injury is body stressing from manual handling, with handling another person being the most common agent of accident. The back is the most frequently injured body part. Nurses sustain 53% of all back injuries in hospitals and nursing homes, making it the single most important occupational health & safety problem facing the nursing profession. (WorkCover NSW 1998, Manual Handling Competencies for Nurses)
